Drift is an inquiry into the daily commute students at Art University Leeds take. By making several students draw map their routes from memory and including two interviews we explore Leeds through the memory and personal (and/or shared) experience.

The overall premise of the film is psychogeography. Psychogeography is a theory on how urban environments shape the way we move through a city and how our cities are a canvas for our own personal stories and emotions. One of my inspirators is Guy Debord’s and his “Theory of the Dérive” (1956). Guy Debord was one of the founding members of the
Situationist International (SI), made up of artists, intellectuals, and political theorists. The Situationists argued that advanced capitalism transformed individual expression from an
authentic experience to a mediated form through the consumption of commodities. This shift resulted in significant harm to both individuals and society. The Dérive (drift) is a performative walk through a city without having a set destination or time. It would make you become aware of how a city resonates with different states of mind, passions and desires and find a way back to the individual expression.

Using Bill Nichols’ six modes of documentary this documentary is a hybrid of the poetic, observational and participatory modes.
