The forgotten book
2023

Website and book

At the beginning of school year 22-23, a small library will be set up in the Maastricht Institute of Art at Herdenkingsplein 12. For this purpose, books have been collected from various locations of Zuyd University from the old libraries dating back to 1971. From these hundreds of books a selection will be made. The books not chosen stay in wooden crates next to the ceramics workshop. For two weeks, students were allowed to pick and take these free of charge. The rest will be disposed of.

These books, not worthy enough for the new library,  student Pieternelle Maris also looked at. It was not the contents, but the stamp cards in a pocket on the inside cover that caught her eye. 7/10-71 handwritten, 18 MAY 1972 with black stamp ink to 1-NOV-2014. All of these books have their own story: some borrowed often, some rarely, spread over 10-20 years, of all times or a one-off in 1974. From more than 200 books, Pieternelle has collected the stamp cards and rescued them from oblivion. Over the past 50 years, these books have been borrowed a combined total of more than 1,500 times.

Because of the PPG privacy law, these books are remembered anonymously. There is no record of which book was borrowed many or few times or by whom. This data visualization depicts the history of forgotten books. This bookcase is their final resting place.
